People often use these terms interchangeably, but they are different. Ethereum is the network — the platform itself. Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency used to pay for transactions and computations on that network. How Does Ethereum Work?
Since September 2022 — an event known as "The Merge" — Ethereum runs on a system called Proof of Stake. Instead of energy-intensive mining, the network is secured by validators who lock up (stake) ETH as collateral.
To become a validator, you need to stake 32 ETH. Validators are randomly selected to propose and verify new blocks of transactions. In return, they earn rewards. If they act dishonestly, part of their staked ETH can be destroyed — a penalty called slashing.The Merge reduced Ethereum's energy consumption by roughly 99.95%, making it far more environmentally friendly than Bitcoin's mining-based system. Ethereum's block time is about 12 seconds, much faster than Bitcoin's 10 minutes.
What is Gas?
Every action on Ethereum — sending ETH, swapping tokens, minting an NFT — requires computational power. You pay for this in "gas," a fee denominated in ETH. Gas fees rise when the network is busy and fall when it's quiet. During peak periods, high gas fees have been one of Ethereum's biggest criticisms.
Layer 2 — Solving the Scaling Problem
To address high fees, the Ethereum ecosystem has embraced Layer 2 solutions — networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base that process transactions cheaply and quickly, then settle them on Ethereum's main chain. Today, most everyday users transact on Layer 2s rather than directly on Ethereum mainnet.Can You Earn Income With Ethereum?
Yes — through staking. By staking your ETH (either solo with 32 ETH or through pools like Lido and Rocket Pool that accept smaller amounts), you can earn rewards.
